Ferro Alloys Corporation Ltd. was floated in 1955 by the House of Saraf and Mors to become the first major producer of ferro-manganese in the country, the largest manufacturer of ferro alloys and a producer of quality steel.

Names of Mines: Boula, Kathpal and Ostapal Chromite Mine

Name of Deposit & Location: Durga, Laxmi and Shankar lodes are located in Nausahi ultramafic belt , Keonjhar District, Orissa, India.

Geology of Occurrence: Stratiform deposit, dipping steeply 65° to 75° and fragmented by numerous strike and dip faults. The chromite is associated with serpentinite (altered dunite).

Ore Body Description: The average strike length of the ore body is 1310 m NW/SE and the dip of the ore body varies from 65° to 75° towards the NE. The width varies from 1.5 m to 4.0 m. The ore body has been proven to a depth of 250 m.

Mining Techniques Used: Both surface and underground methods are used. Opencast mining is carried out to a depth of 90 m and underground mining to a depth of 200 m.

Reserves: As of 31/10/1999:

Geological reserves: 2322000 tonnes

Mineable reserves: 1858000 tonnes

Cr2O3: 42% and Cr: Fe Ratio: 2.40

Production Capacity: 120000 tonnes, commercial ore of 43% per annum.

Ore Dressing & Beneficiation: The run-of-mine ore is sized and sorted manually.

Type of Ore Produced: Metallurgical and refractory grades.
