JODA EAST IRON MINE
Joda East is located in the keonjhar district, orissa. Tata Steel began mining the iron one reserves at the Joda East Iron Mine in the Keonjhar district in 1955. Joda East Iron Mine is the jewel in the crown of the Mines Division.
Starting with a rated capacity of 2 million tones per anum (Mtpa) ore processing capability, the plant has undergone several de-bottlenecking exercise to increase its capacity gradually to around 2.5Mtpa. The quest for improvement has always driven the Joda Team – in the past and even now.
The Ferro-alloys plant in Joda (earlier Ferro-manganese plant) was installed in 1958 to supply manganese alloys to Jamshedpur. The plant was set up in technical collaboration with Elkem (Norway) ? One of the world’s pioneers in this type of technology.
At Joda, iron one mining is done by the conventional open pit benching system whereby the one body is drilled, blasted and then the fragmented ore is loaded by shovels into dumpers, which haul the material to the crushers.
At the processing plant, the run of mine ore is washed and sized into tumps (-37.5 mm+ 8 mm) and fines (-10 mm + 0.15 mm). Sized ore containing around 66.5% FE (very rich one) is sent to the blast furnaces in Jamshedpur while the fines are despatched for sintermaking.
The Joda Mine was modernised in 1944 by incorporating a wet processing circuit. This resulted in an increase in capacity from 0.72 to 2.1 Mtpa.
In Joda, iron one occurs on a hill top and with extensive mechanised open cast mining as well as due attention to ecological factors, a pollution-free ambience is maintained in the entire valley. The mine employs a total of around 480 persons.
Nearly 50 years old, iron ore at Joda East Iron Mine is extracted by mechanised open cast mining methods in a series of 9 meter high benches. Equipped with a Wet Processing Circuit and primary and secondary crushing, scrubbing, screening and classification facilities, the mine is capable of producing sized ore (-37.5mm to +10mm) and classifier fines (-10mm).
The Gomardih (State of Orissa) Dolomite Quarry under the Joda operations is another important minerals resource. Dolomite from the region is extracted after drilling and blasting in a series of 4 meter high benches. The mine has capability to crush and screen the extracted ore in to different product ranges sech as Lumps (-75mm to +40mm), Flux (-40mm to +25mm), Chips (-25mm to +10mm) and Fines (-10mm).
