LOCATION OF THE MINE:
The Donimalai (Navalatti) Iron Ore Mines is situated near the P.W.D. road connecting Donimalai at Appanahalli. The nearest Railway station is Toranagallu at a distance of 35 Kms. The nearest town is Donimalai Township at a distance of 9 Kms. The Mines approach road is 4 Kms long and is all weather Kutcha road. Karnataka Electricity Board electric lines are available near the foot of the hillock. It is located in Donimalai range of Sandur. The Mines are completely in the forest area.
The lease area is of rugged hilly terrain having ridges and valleys. There are two major drainage gullies starting on this hillock and join the main drainage of the region. The rainwater is drained through them and finally drains into Narihalla rivaulet. The bigest and lowest elevation in the area are 1032 mts, and 902 Mtrs above M.S.L. respectively. The general lumpy of rock formation are -Laterites with a , thickness of 3 to 4 Mts. Ferruginous shale of varying thickness. The general strike of rock series is north -west, south-east the dip is towards north – east. Both Hanging wall and Footwall are shale/phylite. The quality of Ore is high grade analyzing around 66% to 68% of Fe.
METHOD OF WORKING
As the ore body is exposed on the hill, open cast method had been adopted. A bench height of 6 to 6.5 Mtrs each and has been opened into benches in descending order. The method of mining is mechanized system. Over burden & ore is being exploited by (Hydraulic shovels & Wheel Loaders) & Tipper combination.
Working conditions in the mines are bench height is 6.5 Mts. The width of the benches varies from 8 Mtrs and above. All bench floors are cleaned and free from trees, boulders and other loose materials. Footpaths are provided whenever necessary. The mine has been opened from the hillocks. The slope of benches is regularly maintained at 70°. Waste material generated is dumped all along the roads thereby widening of roads to increase the safety measures.
