DEOGIRI MANGANESE & IRON ORE MINES
Name of the Owner: Sandur Manganese & Iron Ores Ltd. The Mine belongs to erstwhile Maharaja of Sandur.
Brief geology:- The Sandur Mangnese deposit were earlier exploited during the period of Tipu Sultan later on lease was handed over to some Belgian company and in the year 1964 Indian company Sandur Mangnese and Iron Ore Limited was formed and still it is continued. The mine is situated at a distance of about 10 km from sandur Taluka at Devgiri post office of Bellary district. The Mangnese ore deposits is of Sandur basin belonging to Dharwar super group late Archean age. Mineralization had taken place in Schistose group in various schist band called as Sandur Schist belt. Nature of deposit is Stratiform type Podiform type and tabular type. Generally Mn Ore bodies occur within the Phyllites with monolithic structure and the ore bodies are lateritoid formed in cavities due to leaching and supergene enrichment process. The approximate strike length of ore body was 850 m and dip is 40-50 ° NE.
The strike length of the mine is almost along north-east extending for a length of about 660m. At present one block namely Block no.KMK (east) is being worked. The size of the block is 850 m (E-W) x 450 m (N-S) and about 105 m deep. This is the main production pit and producing about 7000 ton per month. The total lease area of 703 ha.
