Tungabhadra Minerals Private Limited is joint venture Company established in 1971 with Salgaocars Mining Industries Pvt. Ltd., of Goa and Government of Karnataka owned Mysore Minerals Limited. The company is managed by a board of directors of which three directors are from Government of Karnataka holding the ex-officio status. The company is one of the leading mining company doing mining activities for last 3 decades in Bellary- Hospet iron Ore Sector of Karnataka. The company is operating 4 mining lease by adopting open caste mechanized mining method as per the setting of local geological setting and topography. The company is well equipped with all technical expertise to take up the surface mining activity right from exploration to exploitation and processing. The company is one of the recipient of National Safety Award from the then President of India, His Excellency Shri R Venkatanarayanan.
The mine is located near village Taranagar of Sandur Taluk, Bellary District in Karnataka State. The lease is in Ettinahatti Iron Ore Range which situated to the East and South East of Sandur and to the South of Toranagallu Railway station. It lies between latitude 15°07’15″ and longitude 76°38’15″. Sandur is the taluk headquarters. The area is well accessible by road.
GEOLOGY AND EXPLORATION
The Ettinahatti range where the TMPL mines are located forms the Eastern most part of the main Sandur Syncline, the axis of which runs NNW -SSE. The mining leases operated by TMPL comprise of Konanaharvu block (KH), Ubbalagundi block (UG), Ragarakolla block (RK) and Appanahalli block (APH). The Iron Ore deposits are found as capping and are enriched from Banded Hematite Quartzite Ferruginous shale, the formation being equivalent to those of Bihar, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh. The area consists of Upper Dharwarian rocks of Ferrugenous shale, Banded Hematite Quartzite and basic igneous rocks. The occurrence of Iron Ore lies in the form of narrow elongated lenses of variable size lying in parallel en- echelon fashion and enclosed by shale and BHQ.
There are 2 Iron Ore bodies spread over in an echelon fashion running NW -SE to a length 100 meters to 1750 meters, width 15 to 45 meters and to a depth of 30 to 100 meters. Dips are Southwesterly and vary from 65 to 80 degrees. Some places northeasterly dips so noticed. The average grade of ore is 65% Fe. The ore bodies are in general friable powdery in nature in the ratio of 70:30 towards Fines and Lumps respectively. The ore of the ridges is medium hard to soft and with progressive depth is becomes friable and powdery.
The mine is being worked for the past 35 years by opencast semi-mechanised method. To match the current steady increase in procurement of all forms of Iron Ore domestically/Export from last 5years, the mines are being operated fully Mechanised. In the reef ore bearing zones open cast mechanised bench mining methods are in practice. Drilling and blasting techniques are used to exploit the hard formations. Company is having Hydraulic Excavators for progressing benches and handling of Ore/Waste material. Wagon drills and Compressors are used for drilling purpose. Wheel leaders and tippers are used for loading and hauling of Waste/Ore.
Mine is being developed systematically; separate benches are there for over burden and Ore. In the beginning of the year, Company’s Geology & Planning department give the ultimate markings to form benches in Ore and over burden as per the deposit formation set up based on the fixed production target. At present there are 2 Ore bearing benches running parallel to strike direction, and 12 over burden benches are also running parallel to Ore bearing benches. Bench height is around 8 metres; width is around 10 metres in non operating benches/and Length is varying form 150 to 350 meters. Bench slopes are maintained as per the standards.
Company is having its own network of Transportation system including its railway siding at a distance of 3 Kms. i.e., Bannihatti railway station where cargo is transported through trucks (Department/Hired) from Processing plant. Mechanized loading system is adopted at railway yard. Further cargo is stocked at river loading plots to transport the same to ship for exports. Company is having 2 such river loading plots viz., VAGUS AND DIGHAXI at Goa. Company’s parent firm owns Tran shipper -GOSALIA which can load about 10,000 tons per day and also OSFT which can stack about 70,000 tons on board and can load about
50,000 tons per day in mid sea Exports are also made through Chennai Mangalore, Krishnapatnam Ports, loading plots at Bharathi Dock & Jawahar Dock.
