Tungsten, also known as wolfram, is a chemical element that has the symbol W. Tungsten is found in the minerals wolframite (iron-manganese tungstate, FeWO4/MnWO4), scheelite (calcium tungstate, (CaWO4), ferberite and hübnerite.

The all India total resources of tungsten ore as on 1-4-2005 (provisional) are 87.4 million tonnes with WO3 content of 142,094 tonnes. All the resources are under Remaining Resource category. All the resources are in freehold. In Karnataka, scheelite occurs in association with auri-ferrous bodies in Kolar and Hutti Gold field.
